ギャング映画の濃い口 薄口
すごく面白いのにインパクトに欠ける映画、『アメリカン・ギャングスター』もそんな作品でした。見終わった時はかなり盛り上がっていたのに、今ではあまり印象に残っていません。これってDVDを買わす新たなギミックなんでしょうか。
ヘロインの元締めに扮するデンゼル・ワシントンとやさぐれデカを演じるラッセル・クロウがガップリ四つで対決し、メガフォンをとるのがリドリー・スコットという期待度満点の作品だったんですけど、あっさり薄味に仕上げたという感じでした。
序盤から中盤は主人公2人の物語が別々に語られ、終盤に2人が激突するというドラマチックな展開で、演出も演技もソツがなく上手いんですが…沸点が低い。
ドラッグ&ギャング映画は数多くありますが、デカとの対決を軸にした作品に絞ると『フレンチ・コネクション』と『イヤー・オブ・ザ・ドラゴン』がパッと頭に浮かびます。筋は似ていてもこの2作にはアメギャンにはない過剰さがあって、観ていて熱くなるんですよね。
またこの3作はストーリーだけでなく、悪役がスマートで、デカがだらしないというキャラ設定も共通しています。でも、その点においてもアメギャンはもうひとつ突き抜けていません。
まずデカから比較すると、イヤドラのスタンリーはニュースキャスターとの浮気からはじまり、彼のせいで部下や奥さんがバタバタ殺されるというお騒がせぶりを発揮。フレコネのドイルに至っては手錠をつかった変態セックス（個人的には変態とは思いませんが一応体裁を気にしてこう書いておきます）をするわ、間違って同僚を撃ち殺すわ、果ては犯人に逃げられるわ、もう滅茶苦茶。それに比べてアメギャンのリッチー刑事は至って普通。というか夜学に通って司法試験に受かるほどの頑張り屋さん。
次に悪役を比べると、これはもうイヤドラのジョン・ローン演じるジョーイが圧倒的に素晴らしい。アメギャンのフランクもいい線いってたんですけど、捕まった途端さわやかな笑顔を浮かべて警察に協力するところが気にくわない。それだったらフレコネのジャルニエみたいに伊達男ぶりを振りまいてスゴスゴ退散する方が粋でいい。
とまぁ散々言いましたが、それでも『アメリカン・ギャングスター』はリドリ−・スコットが近年撮った映画の中ではベストといえる出来です。と言ってもあまり褒めているように聞こえないので、最近のギャング映画の中でも松クラスに入る作品だと言い直しておきます。
